God Disciplines Out of Love For Us

Today's Devotional
I start every day with God and reading daily devotions from Our Daily Bread. Today’s devotion is titled “Love That Disciplines.” Daniel Ryan Day wrote this devotion. The scripture reading is from Proverbs 3:11–12. The key verse is, “Do not despise the Lord’s discipline.” Proverbs 3:11. My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ; before I write, I first pray to God to guide my words to serve as spiritual food and guidance. I desire God to be my sole source of writing. All the credit goes to God, not me. I am his humble servant. I thank God that He led me to use Our Daily Bread Ministries to inspire comments and witnessing.
All of us faced and experienced discipline at some times in our lives. We learned to discipline our children through our parents. Most of the time, it was not pleasant. As a result, sometimes we fear God’s discipline, and other times we misinterpret bad things in our lives as God’s discipline. It is far from the heart of a loving Father who disciplines us because He delights in us and corrects us because He loves us.
Discipline gets a bad rap at times. The word discipline is traced back to “disciple” as one who follows another for learning. When God disciplines us, it is for our knowledge or correction. God lovingly corrects us when we make wrong choices or trains us for a new purpose.
Instead of fearing God’s discipline, we need to learn to accept his instruction. When we hear God’s voice of correction in our hearts or experience conviction when reading Scripture, we should thank God that He delights in us enough to lead us to what is the best.
Reflect
How do you recognize God’s discipline? How do you sense the love of God in the midst of it?
My prayer for us:
God, help us to recognize Your discipline so that we can discover the freedom You offer.
